Trekking Around Shaxi
Ma Ping Guan This two day hike is one of Shaxi's highlights. The first day, hike for approximately 6 hours along the ancient salt trade route deep into the mountains. Along the way pass horse caravans and meet the wood collectors and traders who supply the Shaxi valley with its lumber. Drink from fresh mountain springs and enjoy the grand views. In the afternoon arrive at Ma Ping Guan, Bai Minority village. Ma Ping Guan is a small village of just a hundred or so farmers. It is a beautiful old village that grew out of the necessity to supply passing traders with food and lodging. Stay at a local family's home and eat delicious local grown foods. Spend the night around the home hearth chatting and laughing with your gracious hosts. The second day, wake up early and stroll around the village, or teach English at the elementary school (a school of 8 students.) Before noon, depart for the 6 hour hike down. Hike through ancient forests of tall trees draped in moss. Arrive at the town of Misha, home to one of the areas most important salt wells. Soak in a local hot springs on the way back to Shaxi.
Bai Minority Mountain Village Horse Trek Ride local horses or hike up through pine forests for a three hour journey to a bustling Bai minority village up above the Shaxi valley. Have a specially prepared lunch with a local family, and if your lucky enough, sample some of the plums from the local farms.
Yi Minority Mountain Village Trek Spend one day hiking into mountains high above the Shaxi valley to a traditional Yi minority village. Mr. Wu and you will be warmly welcomed into a villager's home for lunch. The trip takes approximately 3 hours up and two hours down. Wake up early as the sunrise and fresh morning mountain air is well worth it.
